What to Pack for Labor and Delivery
There is nothing in this world more exciting than preparing for the birth of your new baby. You’ve got the diapers, the crib, the comforter, the 42 tiny little t-shirts and creepers - but you’re forgetting something, aren’t you? Before you get to bring baby home from the hospital, you get to GO to the hospital. You should be as well-prepared for that as your baby will be to come home. If you’re down to about a month before your due date, it’s time to pull out a gym bag and get your emergency bag packed so that you won’t have to send hubby hunting through your stuff to bring you what you need while you’re in the hospital with baby,
What to pack for childbirth
The last thing you need to worry about when you’re timing contractions is where the heck you put your hairbrush. To avoid rushing around at the last minute - or worse, being stuck at the hospital without the things you need, pack a ‘grab and go’ bag with all the essentials, and stash it by the front door, ready to go when you are. You’re grab-and-go bag should include both the necessities (like your insurance cards) and a few little luxuries to make you feel wonderful both during and after labor.
Here’s a basic list of what to pack for a hospital delivery.
Vital Information:
- Insurance cards - presenting your insurance membership cards is one way to get through the check-in and registration process a whole lot faster.
- A list of emergency contact numbers.
- Your personal phone book, so you don’t forget anyone you wanted to call with the happy news
For your comfort during labor:
1. Warm socks. Cold feet may seem a minor discomfort compared to labor, but keeping your feet warm can help keep your entire body warm. It’s surprisingly effective.
2. Lip balm (SPF15 Moiststik - Natural Lip Moisturizer). It’s another of those things people don’t think about. Especially if you use Lamaze breathing, your lips will get dry. Having a tube of lip balm along will help keep them from chapping and cracking.
3. Moisturizer or lotion (Intensive Hydrating Lotion) to use massaging. Seriously. A soothing shoulder and backrub can help you relax and get through the worst of labor far more easily.
4.A book or magazine or deck of cards. Again, seriously. During the early stages of labor, you’ll be thankful for something to occupy your mind between contractions.
For your comfort after childbirth:
5. A fresh, clean nightgown and robe. You’ll appreciate getting out of that hospital Johnny as quickly as possible.
6. Your hairbrush and makeup - the hospital will usually only provide a comb. You’ll be surprised how quickly you feel better after giving your hair a good brushout.
7. A bottle of shampoo and conditioner. Because trust me when I tell you that you won’t want to use what the hospital provides on your hair.
8. Your favorite perfume - preferably something light. (Forever Vanilla Perfume Spray)
